5 Pressure Washer Pump Maintenance Tips That Double Pump Life
The pump is the most expensive single component in any pressure washer. Replacing one can run $400 to $1,200+ depending on the machine. These five habits cost almost nothing and will keep your pump running for thousands of hours instead of hundreds.
1. Run Fresh Water Through Before Shutdown
Detergent left sitting in a pump will corrode seals and valves faster than almost anything else. Before shutting down, run clean water through the system for 60–90 seconds. This takes two minutes and can add years to pump life.
2. Use the Right Oil — and Change It on Schedule
Most triplex plunger pumps run on non-detergent SAE 30 oil. Check your manual. Change the oil after the first 50 hours of use, then every 250–300 hours after that. Old oil loses its viscosity and protective properties.
3. Never Run the Pump Dry
A dry-running pump can destroy seals and pistons in seconds. Always verify water supply is flowing before engaging the trigger. If you're on a tank setup, keep an eye on your level. A simple inlet strainer will also protect against debris.
4. Winterize or Store Properly
If your machine will sit for more than a few weeks — especially in cold weather — pump the system with a pump-safe antifreeze or storage solution. Water left in a pump can freeze and crack the manifold.
5. Watch Your Inlet Pressure
Insufficient water supply causes cavitation — tiny bubbles that implode against pump internals and erode them over time. Your pump needs adequate water flow, not just adequate pressure.
